Silicon Steel Materials in Various Production Scenarios

Silicon steel splits into two families, and the family you choose depends entirely on whether the magnetic flux travels in one direction or rotates. Grain-oriented (CRGO) steel works where flux follows a fixed path—transformers. Non-oriented (CRNGO) steel works where flux rotates—motors and generators. Pick the wrong family and you waste 2–5% efficiency immediately. Here is how the choice plays out across production scenarios.

Scenario 1 — Distribution Transformers

In a distribution transformer, flux travels around a closed magnetic loop in one direction. Consequently, CRGO is the default. The core builds from cut laminations or wound strip. For standard 10–35 kV distribution units, Slit Silicon Steel Core for Distribution Transformer arrives as pre-slit strip ready for core cutting. For complete laminated cores, Magnetic Cores for Distribution Transformers ships pre-stacked and ready for winding.

Scenario 2 — Three-Phase Power Transformers

Larger three-phase transformers need EI-type or stepped-lap cores. EI Core Lamination provides the standard E-I stack for small and medium three-phase units. For higher-efficiency designs, Transformer Steel Laminations cut from Hi-B CRGO reduce no-load loss by 15–25% compared to standard CGO.

Scenario 3 — Electric Motor Stators and Rotors

In a motor, flux rotates 360 degrees as the shaft turns. Oriented steel would be useless here, because its good direction becomes a weak direction. Therefore, motor makers use CRNGO. Thinner gauges (0.35 mm) reduce high-frequency core loss; thicker gauges (0.50 mm) suit low-speed industrial motors. Electrical CRNGO Silicon Steel Sheet in Coils for Motor supplies the coil stock that motor lamination stampers run on high-speed presses.

Scenario 4 — Reactor and Inductor Cores

Reactors handle DC bias plus AC ripple, so they need a controlled air gap. EI Core With GAP Lamination adds a precision gap to prevent saturation under DC current. This is common in variable-frequency drives and power-factor correction reactors.

Scenario 5 — Small Appliance Motors

Washing machines, exhaust fans, and compressor motors use small stamped cores. Silicon Steel Coiled Magnet Ring for Automatic Washer Motors supplies the thin CRNGO strip that produces small ring-shaped laminations at high speed. Cost matters here, so mid-grade CRNGO rather than premium Hi-B is the usual choice.

Quick Selection Rule

  • Flux fixed, closed loop → CRGO (transformers, reactors with gap).
  • Flux rotating → CRNGO (motors, generators, alternators).
  • High frequency or high efficiency → thinner gauge (0.27–0.35 mm).
  • Low frequency, cost-sensitive → thicker gauge (0.50 mm).
