Simple Identification Methods for Silicon Steel
I. Observing Surface Texture Features
Silicon steel sheets have a unique identifying mark: the surface insulating coating. Examine under a magnifying glass:
- High-quality oțel siliconic: Uniform off-white coating with fine crystalline luster
- Ordinary steel: No coating at all, or rough dark oxide scale
- Counterfeit products: Uneven coating with frequent air bubbles or cracks
Tip: Gently scrape the surface with a fingernail. Genuine oțel siliconic only leaves shallow scratches without powder flaking off.
II. Simple Magnetic Test Experiment
Professional inspection can be done with just a magnet:
- Attraction test: Silicon steel delivers moderate magnetic attraction and slides off easily
- Residual magnetism observation: Barely retains magnetism once the magnet is removed
- Comparative test: Ordinary steel sheets exert strong, persistent attraction, while electrical steel shows weak attraction
Note: Avoid testing edge areas; flat surfaces yield more accurate results.
III. Sound Test via Bending
Silicon steel produces a distinctive sound when bent:
- Bent at 30°: Emits a clear crisp “ding” sound with excellent springback performance
- Ordinary cold-rolled steel sheet: Muffled sound with obvious creases at the bend
- Inferior material: May crack directly or produce a hoarse grinding noise
Safety reminder: Wear gloves during operation to prevent cuts from sharp edges.
