5Cr4MoV (or often 5Cr15MoV/5Cr15Mo) is a common, affordable Chinese stainless steel for knives, known for its good corrosion resistance, toughness, and ease of sharpening, but with moderate hardness and edge retention, making it great for general use, kitchen knives, and low-maintenance tools rather than high-performance tactical blades. The “5Cr4MoV” likely refers to roughly 0.5% Carbon (C), 15% Chromium (Cr), and small amounts of Molybdenum (Mo) and Vanadium (V). 

 

Key Characteristics:

  • Composition: High Chromium (around 15%) for stainlessness, moderate Carbon (around 0.5%), plus Molybdenum & Vanadium for strength/wear.

  • Hardness: Moderate (around 54-57 HRC), good for general use but not extreme hardness.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Very good due to high chromium.

  • Toughness: Excellent, resists chipping well.

  • Edge Retention: Poor to moderate; dulls faster but sharpens easily.

  • Best For: Kitchen knives, everyday carry (EDC) knives, manicure tools, low-maintenance applications. 

In essence, think of 5Cr15MoV as a workhorse steel: durable, rust-resistant, and easy to maintain, though it won’t hold an edge as long as premium steels
