Differences Between Conventional Grain-Oriented Steel and High Magnetic Induction Grain-Oriented Steel Selected for Transformer Cores

Conventional grain-oriented electrical steel (CGO) and high magnetic induction grain-oriented electrical steel (HiB) are two mainstream transformer core materials. The two steel grades differ greatly in texture structure, magnetic performance and application scenarios.

First, internal grain texture has essential differences. CGO steel forms ordinary Goss texture through common rolling and annealing. Its grain orientation accuracy has certain errors. HiB steel adopts precise texture control technology. It achieves higher grain orientation consistency and more complete grain arrangement.

Second, magnetic induction performance shows obvious gaps. HiB steel has higher saturation magnetic induction under the same specification. It can bear higher magnetic flux density during operation. This feature allows transformer core miniaturization and lightweight design. CGO steel has relatively lower magnetic bearing capacity.

Third, core loss performance differs significantly. HiB steel has lower hysteresis loss and overall no-load loss. It maintains low loss state under high magnetic density working conditions. CGO steel has stable performance but higher loss than HiB steel. The loss gap expands under long-term full-load operation.

Fourth, anti-magnetic aging capacity is different. HiB steel has purer material structure and fewer internal defects. It resists magnetic aging more effectively. Its performance attenuation speed is extremely slow. CGO steel has more internal microscopic defects. It faces gradual efficiency decline after years of operation.

Fifth, application scenarios have clear boundaries. CGO steel suits ordinary small and medium-sized distribution transformers. It balances cost and performance for conventional power distribution needs. HiB steel applies to large power transformers and high-end energy-saving transformers. It meets ultra-low loss and high stability operation requirements.

Sixth, manufacturing cost and market price differ greatly. HiB steel needs precise production processes and strict quality control. Its production cost and market price are higher than CGO steel. Users select materials according to equipment energy-saving grades and budget limits.

Grain-Oriented Steel

Overall, HiB steel outperforms CGO steel in magnetism, loss and stability. CGO steel retains cost advantages in conventional scenarios. Reasonable material selection helps balance transformer energy-saving effect and economic benefits.
